FEEDING IOTLA VALLEY - Self-Serve Food Pantry Now Open at Iotla UMC
Franklin, NC, June 7, 2019 — Iotla United Methodist church is feeding the valley. They will be hosting a dedication of their new community self-serve food pantry on Friday, June 14th from 11 am – 1 pm. Linda Kelly, District superintendent of the Smokey Mountain region for the Western North Carolina conference, will be on hand to perform the consecration and dedication of the substantial drive-up food pantry box that is accessible 24x7. The dedication will include pizza, salad, and desserts. The Men’s Teens Challenge of the Smokies will provide music.
While the beauty of Iotla Valley beguiles many, but the hidden truth is that many in the area go hungry each day. According to Iotla UMC Lay Leader Donna Keyworth, “The new pantry provides food staples as well as hygiene items. We want to fill the gaps when people may be most in need.”
Iotla launched the food pantry as part of their vitality initiative in March. “People are already visiting and taking what they need. That’s encouraging,” said Keyworth. The church modeled the pantry on several similar self-serve pantries in the county, but this pantry is significantly larger than most. Standing six feet high and three feet wide, the box is loaded with non-perishable food items such as canned hams and cereal. There are also articles of hygiene such as soap, toothpaste, and feminine products.
“Some people are restricted by how often they can visit CareNet and other organizations.” Said Iotla UMC Pastor David DeWitt. “We’re always open!”
Iotla UMC is located directly across the street from Iotla Elementary School, and the pantry is discretely attached to the fellowship hall behind the sanctuary. “We wanted to remove any stigma of using the pantry,” said Pastor David. “All should feel welcome to participate by receiving as well as making donations. This mission is about community.”
Hungry? The pantry is always open. Care to donate? The Pantry is always open for filling.
All are welcome to join in the celebration and dedication of the pantry.
To ensure enough food for the dedication, RSVP Donna at (828) 524-7076.
